This innovative application brings the environment of Cypriot rural household kitchens of the recent past back to life through the use of technology. The digital tour reveals interesting aspects of material culture, which was directly and inseparably linked to local traditional nutrition.
Furniture and fittings, cooking utensils and tools, tableware and serving sets, storage and transport containers are presented with high-quality photographs and richly informative texts in both Greek and English. Together, the exhibits provide answers to key questions regarding the types of traditional Cypriot foods, the techniques and tools used in their preparation, the methods of consumption and storage, as well as the very structure of the kitchen as a vital space in rural homes.
The digital exhibition was produced by the Museum of Cypriot Food and Nutrition as part of the activity “Contemporary Approaches to Traditional Culture: A Digital Tour of the Cypriot Cuisine of the Past” (2016), with partial funding from the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Most of the exhibition items belong to the Bee and Embroidery Museum in Kato Drys, founded in 2008 by Iacovos and Elli Korniotis. The museum’s collections exceed 1,000 objects of traditional culture.
