Cultivation and livestock farming in Mitsero in the 20th century. Reference is also made to the earthquake of 1735 and the destruction in Mitsero.
Additional information and bibliography
Barley, wheat and hay are cultivated on a small scale. There are a few citrus trees, various fruit trees, a few vegetables, legumes (black eyed beans, broad beans). There are also greenhouses, where flowers are grown; recently the systematic cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants was started by a natural cosmetics factory. Livestock farming nowadays is almost non-existent. In the livestock zone, outside the village, there is a farm with cows, and three small herds of sheep and goats. Although in previous years the village was a large, farming and ranching community, today there are only a few poultry in a few households. But earthquakes, landslides and a terrible tornado completely destroyed the village, burying and demolishing the houses. This disaster must have occurred in 1735 and lasted 5-6 minutes and literally devastated the island. Only four (4) families survived in Mitsero. Whether they were members of different families or extended families i.e. brothers and sisters... they could not recover from this disaster. Perhaps the water they were drinking and irrigating the orchards was partly lost. So those who survived decided to move lower and rebuild their settlement where their sheep and goat paddocks were. This site is called the cave. (Moudourou 200?, 4)
