An Italian traveller named Giovanni Mariti, writing in the 1760s, described the domestic animals of the island and those used for meat:

The oxen are small and lean… The sheep supply the best meat… The lambs are chiefly eaten in the summer. The flocks of goats are beautiful…”. Cobham (1971) 15.
