Name - Origin
The small-sized carobs which remained on the carob tree after beating the branches with poles to collect the fruit. These were the ones that the pole (called vakla) could not reach or were on thin (flexible) twigs (Pharmakidou XP, 2003 p. 202).
The word derives from apo-klonion (apoklónia) or from en-eklogi (after the selection), apegloya--> pokloya --> pogloya (Pharmakidou XP, 2003 p. 202)
Functional and symbolic role
Pogloya were collected by poor people, without any objection from the owners of the carob trees. These people were called poglonarides or pogloatori (in Greek πογκλωνάρηδες or πογκλοάτοροι) (Pharmakidou XP, 2003 p. 202).
