Name - Origin
Οπωρικά
Nuts or sweetmeats consumed after a meal. (Common phrase: ‘My dad brought us some porika from the feast’ (Pharmakidou XP, 2003 p.212).
Functional and symbolic role
In some villages, after a childbirth, the people who were present were treated with porika and a drink. At Christenings, spoon sweets and nuts were served with a drink; in the old days, they used to serve porika in a woven tray and they would use a cup to scoop some and place them in each guest's hand (Protopapa, 2009, pp. 90-91, 316, 490).
