March was the most critical month for crops: They used to say that 'March is the commander of the rest of the 11 months'. Five months, one knot (crop growth) One month (March), five knots'.
"Whoever does not irrigate in January, should wait to irrigate in January of the following year" (Appios, 1999 p.41).
In May, grains would ripen, anyway: 'Wheat, barley, dried crops, follow me'.
