Nutritional Value and Importance in the Diet of Cypriots

The edible animals that were available in the 18th century, according to the writings of Archim. Kyprianos in his book Χρονολογική Ιστορία της Νήσου Κύπρου were: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and buffaloes. As regards to poultry, hens, geese, ducks and turkeys are mentioned. Goats, sheep and pigs were found in large quantities. A particular mention is made of the sheep which had a long tail (known as vakla, i.e. sheep fat used in cooking).(Archim. Kyprianos, 1788, p.549)
