Myttoti are mentioned by Theophrastus (4th-3rd c. BC) in his work 'Περί φυτών ιστορίαι' (Enquiry into Plants).

'And in size there is an excellent species, especially the socalled Cypriot garlic, which is not roasted but is used in the cheese, honey and garlic salads and in kneading it takes on an exquisite bulging volume'.
