Supplementary Information

The island has two salt lakes, always lucrative, one near Larnaca and the other near Limassol. Under the Lusignans and the Venetians, the government was exploiting the one in Larnaca, because the one in Limassol was still a fish lake under the Venetians. The Turkish rule used to lease both salt lakes for 30 thousand francs a year, but in the end it had taken charge of the direct and exclusive exploitation, and in recent years it has received about a million francs out of this monopoly. This monopoly was not abolished by the English. Is Cypriot salt of good quality? Syria and Cilicia, Constantinople and Smyrna were supplied with this salt (Frangoudi EN, 1885 p. 45).
