Additional information and bibliography
Wheat and barley, as per their quantity and price, are theprimary products suitable for export through Syria to Cilicia, theAegean islands, Africa and Europe. The wheat is of good quality. The clean wheat of Paphos is one of the most substantial andsignificant in the East. The production of wheat is more than twomillion koiló (Greekκοιλό- koiló, turkish kile, equivalent to 24okas) and the production of barley is more than three millionkoiló but three quarters of the whole amount that is produced, is retained in the country for sowing and providing food for theinhabitants and the animals. Cultivation is carried out in the fields of Mesaoria, Morphou, Paphos, Larnaca and the plain of Nicosia.
Under the Venetians, the production of wheat and barley together amounted to 4 million modia (módi= a unit of weight)equivalent to 1 million koiló, according to the statistics of that time, which Count Mocenigo has indicated to me in Venice(Frangoudi EN, 1885 p. 33).
