A type of sweet with raisins.
Name - Origin
A type of sweet with raisins. In villages with wine and zivania production, during the distillation of zivania, a quantity of fine quality raisins were inserted into a cloth bag and placed next to the water vapour; the raisins would gain sufficient moisture and would ‘turn' into grapes. Their taste was similar to grapes (Pharmakidou, 2003 pp.94-95).
The word derives from ραξ-rax (ραγ-rag) and the suffix -oullos, which indicates magnification. The suffix - oullos was also used for other foods such as bread and wine (e.g. "she kneaded some large psoumoullous (psoumi=bread)", "if he/she decides to drink krasoullo (krasi=wine), he/she needs a whole skin" (Pharmakidou, 2003 pp. 94-95).
