The fruit of konnarká (Yangoullis 2009, entry κόνναρον,το, 213) or palloúra [or tzitzifiá], which is edible and usually has a sweet and sour taste (Gennadios 1914, 405)

Scientific name: Zizyphus lotus
The Greek name tzitzifiá refers to the species Zizyphus vulgaris/ sativa, while the Cypriot name palloúra refers to the species Zizyphus lotus. Tzitzifiá in the Cypriot dialect is called konnapkiá or kounnapkiá (Gennadios 1914, 405).

As Xenophon P. Pharmakidis notes in his Glossary, konnaron is a fruit of inferior quality, so those who think they are despised by others as far as their woth is concerned, "Do we eat konnara?" or "We don't eat konnara" (Kypri 1983 [2003²], entry κόνναρον,το, 164). George Loucas, as well, in the corresponding entry of his Glossary, includes the phrase "Λείψε με κι ας τρώω κόνναρα" (lipse me ki as fao konnara), in order to emphasise that konnaron is lean, tasteless and unnecessary (Kypri 1979 [2002²], entry κόνναρον,το, 228).
