Metaphorically, koutsakos means anything unripe or raw: it is still unripe, it is koutsakos ie it is still unripe, just like an unripe fig (Kypri 1989, entry κούτσακος,ο, 31).

According to Xenophon P. Pharmakidis, koutsakos means the unripe fig and this meaning is widely known throughout the country. In Tillyria, however, koutsakos (pl. koútsatz̆oi) are the big black figs, the so-called vazanata (vazani=aubergine) after their deep purple colour; they use the word koutsátz̆ia to denote that their figs are still unripe (Kypri 1983 [2003²], entry κούτσακος,ο, 473).

George Loukas, in his Glossary, points out that koutsakin is the small unripe fig, which is also called sytziálin or klókkos; so any unripe or hard fruit is koutsakos (Kypri 1979 [2002²], entry κουτσάκιν,το, 252). Koutsakos is the large white fig (Kypri 1979 [2002²], entry κούτσακος,ο, 252).
