Traditional Christmas sweets with a filling of walnuts, cinnamon and sugar. When baked, they are drizzled with syrup and sprinkled with walnuts.

Ingredients

For the pastry:
1/2 kg of self-raising flour 
1/2 kg of plain flour (farina 00)
2 glasses of oil
3/4 glass of beer
1/4 glass of orange juice
1/2 glass of sugar
zest of an orange

For the filling:
1 glass of coarsely chopped walnuts
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp sugar

For the syrup:
1 glass of honey
1 glass of sugar
1 glass of water
a few cloves

Method

In a bowl, whisk well the oil with the beer, sugar, orange juice and orange zest. Add the flour and knead well. Leave the dough in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Roll out the dough into a thick sheet and cut it into 9cm discs. After mixing the walnuts with the cinnamon and sugar, add 1 teaspoon to each disc. Moisten the edges and shape into a roll. Bake the melomakarona in a moderate oven for about 25 minutes. In the meantime, make the syrup: boil all ingredients together for 3 minutes and skim off the foam. Take them melomakarona out of the oven and let them cool down a little and pour the hot syrup over them. Sprinkle with walnuts. (MANRE 2010, 73)
