A wild green of Cyprus, which takes its name from the milky juice of its leaves. It was eaten boiled with oil and lemon juice.
Name - Origin
Ζοχός. Α spiny, herbaceous weed used as animal feed or eaten boiled as a vegetable (Babiniotis 2005, entry ζοχός, ο, 713) / mullein plant, snake plant (Yangoulis 2009, entry γαλατούνα,η, 113 and entry τζ̆ όχχος,ο, 473) / wild green, edible when cooked (Kypri 1983 [2003²], entry γαλατούνες,οι, 139).
Scientific name: sonchus oleraceus (Petrou-Poeitou 2013, entry Γαλατούνα, 34).
The name in some areas is also found as galatounia (Kypri 1983 [2003²], entry γαλατούνες,οι, 139). Also, this green is known as zalatouna, galatohorto and galohorto, common flomos, tsounna (Yangoulis 2009, entry γαλατούνα,η, 113 and entry γαλατόχορτον - γαλόχορτον,το, 113).
The plant got its name from the milky juice of its leaves (PetrouPoeitou 2013, entry Γαλατούνα,, 34).
Galatounes are consumed boiled with oil and lemon juice (Petrou-Poeitou 2013, entry Γαλατούνα, 34).
