Functional and symbolic role
Festive Occasions
Psyhosavvato (Saturday for the souls) is a day of remembrance of the deceased. In Aradippou village, it was customary for the whole family to engage from the day before in the preparation of a soup, in memory and in honour of a deceased. It was called the ‘deceased person's soup’ and also ‘poor person's soup’ because almost all the soup was given to the poor people of the community so as to eat and bless the deceased. This particular custom, which, as far as we know, exists only in Aradippou, is directly connected with honouring deceased family members (Taousiani, 1970 p.31).
