The most important and safest mushrooms to eat are those of the species Agaricus campestris, commonly called white mushrooms or purouthkia when they are still young (Gennadios 1914, 50). Boletus is a species of poisonous mushroom found in Cyprus (Gennadios 1914, 217). The species Lactarius deliciosus and Lactarius controversus are edible and are commonly called red mushrooms (Gennadios 1914, 218).

Panagiotis Loizou in his book «Σπαθαρικό Αμμοχώστου. Το χωρκό μου (ζωή, ιστορία, ασχολίες)», mentions three kinds of mushrooms: The white ones of Anathrika, which are found in the forest of Salamina and are called Vizatz̆ites. The yellowish one of the pine trees that are found in the forest of Salamina under the pine trees or in the mountains of Pentadaktylos. Portomanitara that are found on manure, on threshing floors, in rivers (Loizou 1999, 291).
