Ingredients

Water 
Flour
Cinnamon
Mastic, mahleb, aniseed
Peanut oil
Sugar
Sesame seeds

Method

In a bowl, add all the ingredients, apart from the sesame seeds, mix and knead well. Shape into very thin strips and cover with sesame seeds. Cut into squares and bake in a moderate oven until golden brown. Remove from oven, cut into squares and bake again until browned. (Georgia Pistou, Cooking Cypriot food 2013-2014)

Festive Occasions

Koumoulla were prepared on various festive occasions, such as Christmas and name days. In some areas they were offered when inviting guests to a wedding, while they were particularly associated with birth customs, since they were prepared to be offered as a treat for the newborn.
